One great life lesson I learned long ago is that you should never bet against the power of human will. Sometimes in life, we are afforded the opportunity to meet people who are genuinely in the corner of right. They believe in standing up for what is right, no matter who they happen to be fighting for. They are willing to tackle the tough jobs, but they don't require a limelight to shine. Sometimes, they are even compelled to create change by refusing to give up. In the third, and final, installment of the series, we take a glimpse at what that looks like through the eyes of just such person.
Meet David Nelson
Last summer, at the height of the COVID -19 pandemic, I made up my mind to get back to work on my writing, so I buckled down and went in with a vengeance, as I set out to polish my skills and give anyone reading my blog ample conversation starters. Writing being my favorite outlet, what better way to let off steam from the stress of COVID-19 living? Before long, like everyone else, I was bored to tears for more hours than I could count, so I would hop onto Facebook and just read everyone else's thoughts.
How lucky was I to run across a post by David Nelson? I'm glad you asked!
Sacramento, California native David Nelson, a very intelligent and socially conscious man, would also take to Facebook and share his thoughts. I'm not sure how we actually began to communicate via Messenger, but I found that we had very similar views about "the orange one" and his merry band of idiots. David's posts were engaging and enlightening, and if you know anything about me at all, you know I love a good debate, so I followed many threads started by him. I found myself looking for posts from him, just to take my mind off of the insanity by which I was surrounded. His ideas were provocative, just the stuff that great writing is made of.
I was so impressed by Mr. Nelson's writing, his thoughtful candor, and his unwillingness to engage those who only wanted to fight, that I asked him to allow me to turn his ideas into a blog series. That collaboration yielded some great work on the unemployment benefits crisis in California. It was the start of a great friendship.
It is important to David that all people get a fair shake, so he decided he would start a podcast that would address all of the issues with which he was concerned. I must say, his efforts do not disappoint. David Nelson, co-host of the Look Behind the Curtains Podcast, was gracious enough to grant Queen Things an interview. Here is what he had to say, in his own words.
Queen Things: What made you decide to start a podcast?
D. Nelson: I started the podcast to attempt to level the playing field, as I am tired of seeing greed and hypocrisy have their way, while hardworking people cannot seem to build lives for themselves.
Queen Things: Do you look for stories that are controversial?
D. Nelson: Yes, we do take on controversial subjects such as politics, guns, racism, etc. Rather than telling anyone what to think, believe, feel, etc., we present the facts and let them choose.
Queen Things: Why is social justice so important to you?
D. Nelson: Racial justice has, for centuries, been overlooked, if not ignored. Seeing laws put into place to further this disgraceful agenda has got to stop, and now.
Queen Things: You are so passionate about your views, I wonder what impact you hope to have in your community?
D. Nelson: The impact we seek is to bring change to one life at a time and let it ripple out into the universe.
Queen Things: Have you formed any partnerships or alliances that you feel will help to increase the impact?
D. Nelson: We have contacted racial equality groups as well as media outlets with the hope of working together, but so far we have not received any replies.
Queen Things: Thank you for taking the time to talk to me. I wish you the very best in your endeavors, and I look forward to seeing how your work evolves as you continue your work.
