Black Love: I Think We Need a Break

Writer's picture: Elizabeth F. ThomasElizabeth F. Thomas

Mark and Nikki Demus didn't exactly hit it off when they met. Each felt the other was rude, and after their initial meeting, they didn't speak for at least two months. When they did, it was the start of something neither really expected...a friendship turned love story.

I was pleasantly surprised when I met Alexis "Nikki" Demus. Having known her husband, Mark, for several years, I was curious about the young lady who was finally able to catch "Mark the Spark". Demus attended Skyline High School in Dallas, Texas, where he ran track. My own son also attended the historic high school where it didn't take long for them to become friends and track teammates.

Reminded of the friendship they share to this day, I was interested to hear what this former high school track phenomenon had been up to since his recent nuptials. He and his new bride sat down with me to talk about the things that help make their love and marriage strong.

Mark and Alexis are impressively transparent when discussing how taking a break served to add value to their relationship, and how that break just may have saved it.

This young couple seems to understand what it means to work at keeping a relationship headed in the right direction. I was impressed by how much they referenced their dependence on God for both, their marital, and their independent guidance. Perhaps it is the skeptic in me who keeps going back to how important it is for young people to be exposed to healthy relationships.

Conversely, Mark and Nikki reminded me that I am responsible for broadening my own view of younger people, and for rejecting those pesky, cynical, and hypocritical ideas of the capacity of a generation to be mature and productive in their relationships. Another maxim the couple stands firm on is building and maintaining a quality friendship before committing to each other exclusively.

Mark makes an observation about the "friend zone" rule Nikki subscribed to before they officially started dating.

Nikki and Mark agree on the importance of knowing who you are dating. Nikki says that she recognizes that people often send the best version of themselves when they first meet someone. With Mark's open mind and willingness to accept that he might have brought some extraneous issues into the relationship when he was trying to find out what he wanted from it, Nikki is convinced that Mark did not send his representative when they met because he has always been genuine with her.

One thing is true, the maturity level of this couple seems to be through the roof. Queen Things wishes them the best in their new marriage.
