Black Love: Keeping God First

Writer's picture: Elizabeth F. ThomasElizabeth F. Thomas

David and Kim Jermany wear almost identical smiles as they prepare to answer my interview questions. The Jermanys are the only couple in our debut series with whom I was not previously acquainted. A few minutes into the interview, it was as if we were old friends. They had me laughing from the beginning of our interview until the very end.

This couple is so full of energy, that once you meet them, you can't help but adopt their jovial attitude. David and Kim were gracious enough to allow Queen Things a glimpse into their story.

Kim says that she is appreciative of David for his constant support of her. She describes her husband as a keeper because she says he is loyal, dependable, hardworking, and a man of God.

The Jermanys believe in keeping God at the center of their marriage, and David jokes that he knew that he and Kim were right for each other because she could "hold the yoke", referring to the Bible scripture from which the idea comes. It is easy to see that Mr. Jermany has a deep respect for his wife's strength, in more ways than one.

David and Kim agree that, though there were some stressors during the pandemic, they were not major ones. Like many of the rest of us, they experienced adjustment issues with virtual learning. With a kindergarten student at home, Kim is concerned that he may fall behind academically.

Kim says that she was mean when she and David met, but he says he had been praying for a wife and that God directed him to her. Just as quickly as the sentence was spoken, he adds a comical response, that Kim had obviously heard before.

On David's relationship with Kim's grandfather, the couple agrees that it was a special one, and it left David with a deep love and respect for him. He says that his wife's grandfather tried to teach him the difference between wisdom and knowledge. Kim says her grandfather's advice to David about how to get along with her was also very beneficial.

Whatever that advice was, it appears that David paid attention.
